How to Make Your College Dorm Room Feel Like Home

Hey yall!

Moving away from home for the first time can be intimidating. Especially if you are close with your family and actually enjoy being at home. One of the hardest things can be leaving home and being in an unfamiliar place with people you don’t know. It’s very easy to feel out of place and homesick at times. But you can make being away from home easier in a couple of ways.

Letters + Memorabilia

One cute thing you could do is to ask your family members and friends from home to write you a letter to open when you start to miss them and feel homesick. That way when things get rough you have something to read and help make you feel better. You could also ask your friends and family to give you something to bring with you to remember them by. If you and your best friend have an inside joke about something like Justin Timberlake’s Ramen Noodle hair from back in the day then get your bestie a poster of him on it to laugh about while she’s away from you!

Hang Up Pictures

Bring pictures from high school, pictures of your family, pictures of your pets, any pictures that make you smile. To make it even better find a cute way to display them like in a shape on the wall, hang them on string with clothespins, pin them to a cork board, there’s plenty of different ways to bring those pictures to life + add to your dorm decor.

Bring Something From Home

Pick something special to bring with you from home. Do you have a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, book, or lamp from home that has always been around? Bring a small nick nack that’s meaningful to you to add some personality to your room.

Make it Soft

The number one thing I love about my home is just how comfy everything is. I am so comfortable in my couch, chairs, bed, even the floors are just comfy. One key thing to help make your dorm room feel like home is to make it super soft and comfortable. Buy some plush blankets to go on your bed to snuggle up with. Bring lots of pillows so it feels like your sleeping on a rug. A nice throw rug will keep your feet warm and a mushroom chair of some sorts are always good for relaxing.

Smell Goods

Making your dorm room feel like home can be easier with smells. You would be surprised with how smells can bring back memories and bring back a sense of nostalgia. Now, you can’t have candles in the dorm rooms but you can use the same laundry detergent or fabric softener that your mom uses when she does your laundry, a certain Fabreeze scent or even flowers can bring a bit of home to your dorm.

DIY Everything

Home is home because it was built with love and has the markings of a family, right? Well mark up your room! With DIY stuff of course. Make your decorations, paintings, drawings, and make it personal to you with your interests in mind. Make your room unique to you, not like every other dorm room you see on Pinterest.

Lots of Color

Add lots and lots of color to your room to brighten things up. Bright summer and spring colors will bring happiness along with it. The dorms are already going to be drab with grays and whites so you want to fill it with color so it isn’t so dreary.

Light it Up

Like I said before, dorm rooms are a bit dreary and dark so after you add lots of color to your room brighten it up with some twinkle lights and by keeping your windows open for some natural light.

Comfort Food

The best thing about home is that it is always fully stocked with food (hopefully most of the time). To make your dorm room more like home stock up on some nostalgic home snacks and foods to counter the bad college campus foods.

Make New Memories

The biggest thing you can do to make your dorm room feel like home is to make it full of happiness, memories, friends, and laughter. You want to live in a space you love to be in and in a space you’re happy in so be sure to make new friends and have them over to make some new memories!
