The Ohio State University Meal Plan Breakdown | How it Works

Hey yall!

I’ve been getting a lot of requests on my Youtube to do a video on how the OSU Meal Plans work because they are very confusing. And guess what, I finally did just that! So, if you are a video kind of person, feel free to watch it HERE! But if you’re more a reader, I wanted to explain it on my blog too, so keep reading!

Dining Dollars

What is it?

Dining Dollars are just like regular money. On your meal plan you will get a set amount of Dining Dollars to use for the semester. If you don’t use all of your Dining Dollars at the end of the semester they will roll over on your account to the next semester, until you graduate.

Where can I use it?

You can use Dining Dollars at any on-campus dining location or C-Store, which is like a corner store that you can get a small variety of grocery items for your dorm (Connecting Grounds, Marketplace on Neil, and Morrill C-Store).

What is it worth?

$1.00 of real money is the same as $1.00 of Dining Dollars. When you go to an on-campus cafe for a coffee in the morning the price will be, let’s assume, $2.75 for a small. You will then pay $2.75 worth of Dining Dollars for that coffee. So think of Dining Dollars just like your debit card.

When you use your Dining Dollars at any on-campus dining location you receive a 35% discount automatically just for using Dining Dollars. If you use your Dining Dollars at a C-Store on campus you will receive a 10% discount automatically.

Buck ID Cash

What is it?

Buck ID Cash is the same concept as Dining Dollars in the sense that it is like regular money and is worth the same amount as regular dollars in your wallet. You will also get a set amount of Buck ID Cash to use for the duration of the semester.

Where can I use it?

Buck ID Cash can be used at off-campus locations for dining or shopping. Certain locations will have a sign saying they accept Buck ID Cash, and as long as an establishment has this sign you are free to use your Buck ID Cash. You can use it at Applebee’s, Sonic, Buckeye Donuts, CVS, Gateway Movie Center, Mad Mex, etc.

Traditional Visits (Swipes)

What is it?

Your meal plan will be named after how many swipes you will receive with your meal plan. Example: Gray 10 gets 10 swipes, Scarlet 14 gets 14, Unlimited gets unlimited swipes, and so on. Your swipes are only good for a week. Every Monday morning at 3:00am what you didn’t use, you will lose, and they will re-fill for the new week.

Where can I use it?

Your swipes are meant to be used at OSU’s Traditional Dining Locations, which are our buffet locations (Kennedy Commons, Scott, and Morrill Commons). 1 swipe will gain you entry into the buffet to stay and eat as long as you would like.

You can also use your swipes at other on-campus dining locations, these are called Visit Exchanges, which we will get to in a minute.

What is it worth?

1 swipe will gain you entry into one of our Traditional Dining Locations.

Visit Exchanges

What is it?

A Visit Exchange is what we call using a Swipe, or a Traditional Visit, at another on-campus dining location, other than our Traditional Dining Locations, or at a C-Store.

Where can I use it?

You can use your Swipes as a Visit Exchange at any on-campus dining location or any C-Store on campus.

What is it worth?

1 Visit Exchange is worth $8.00 when you use it at a dining location. So you can buy $8.00 worth of food with a Visit Exchange. However, 1 Visit Exchange is only worth $5.00 when you use it at a C-Store.

As I mentioned in the Swipe section, you only have so many Swipes that have to be used by the end of the week or you lose them, so many times at the end of the week when students have left over swipes they go to the C-Store and spend their extra Swipes as Visit Exchanges to purchase small grocery items for their dorm rooms, that way they aren’t wasting what they already paid for.
