I know we’ve all reached that point in the semester where we’ve checked out and given up. It’s almost summer and it’s so hard to focus on your homework and assignments, I know. I am there right now. I am losing what little motivation I have left to finish out this semester. But we can’t quit now! We’re almost there!
Here are some ways to push through the end of the semester slump
It is hard to stay motivated if you don’t have anything to be motivated for. At this point in the semester it is important to reevaluate yourself and set some goals for the last 5 weeks of classes. They can be little things such as brushing your teeth every night, working out 2-3 times a week, or looking for a summer job. Your goals can also be big ones like acing your chem final, completing your assignments BEFORE the deadline, or actually going to class everyday.
For some people, like me, making goals just isn’t enough to get me motivated. I like to make things a little more interesting. Ask your roommate or one of your friends to challenge you this semester with some of your goals. To make it even MORE interesting yall could place bets to see who can go to class everyday or lose 5 pounds and the loser has to buy dinner or a new pair of shoes for the winner! This way you have someone to go up against and a real motivator to make sure you actually complete your goals. You could also just plan rewards for yourself such as eating ice cream on Saturday if you go to the gym 3 times this week, or something like that!
Make a Plan
Take a look at the remaining weeks ahead and see what’s coming up. How many tests, quizzes, and midterms are coming? Which classes have papers due? Is there any extra credit coming up that I should do? Figure these things out and then make a plan and get organized so you can finish out these last few weeks strong.
Utilize your planner, set a daily hourly schedule of when you’ll be studying, when you’ll be eating, hanging out with friends, and even sleeping. This will help you stay on track and make saying no to things you don’t have time for easier. The plus side to making an hourly plan everyday is that you can see how much extra time in the day you have to binge watch Netflix!
Practice Self Care
It is very easy to feel the end of the semester slump when you aren’t sleeping well, eating unhealthy, and being very sluggish. Make sure you are taking care of your body during this time, it will help you keep the energy and motivation for finishing the semester. Make goals to go to the gym, or try a new healthy item on campus, dedicate a day to just lounging around and catching up on sleep and your favorite show. Take some time to worry about yourself and not just school.
Don’t settle for less than you can do. Don’t settle for studying 10 minutes before an exam because you think you’ll be fine. Take the extra time the night before and actually put forth the effort to getting an A. Don’t take the easy way out of things this close to the end. All of these assignments matter and you need to put 100% into them. Don’t settle for being 10 minutes late to class for an extra 10 minutes of sleep, do the responsible thing and go to bed 10 minutes earlier for that extra 10 minutes of sleep AND be on time to class!
Remember Why You’re Here
At this point in the semester when all of your motivation is slipping away and you’re contemplating dropping out (as a joke of course…right?) please remember why you’re here in the first place. Why you chose your school, your major, what are your aspirations in life, what are your dreams for the future? Think abut those things and ask yourself is what you should be doing helping to achieve those things? If the answer is yes then you should probably do it. Go to class, finish that assignment, study for your midterm, and go to that student org meeting because all of those things are going towards your degree and a great resume which you need for your dream job and your future. Remember the big picture! And always remember, listen to Michelle Obama!
